VI begins in the hard cold of a Chicago winter, where fresh snow cannot hide the dirt for long. The streets are gray, the air bites, and every block seems to be holding on to old damage. It is the kind of city where secrets do not disappear. They freeze, waiting for the thaw.
Somewhere inside that winter, a killer is leaving more than bodies behind. The murders form a pattern. The pattern becomes a message. And the deeper the hunt goes, the clearer it becomes that this is not random violence. The killer has a purpose, and sin has a signature.
A different kind of darkness
The Record of the Paladins books gave me a broad battlefield: faith and spiritual warfare, ancient callings, and people forced to stand against powers larger than themselves. With VI, I wanted to narrow the walls and bring the danger closer.
There are no Paladins riding into this story. There is no series history readers must know before opening the first page. VI stands on its own, grounded in crime, consequence, obsession, and the terrible evidence human beings leave behind.
Writing outside the Paladins series gave me the freedom to explore suspense in a more intimate way. The threat is not waiting beyond the horizon. It is already in the room. The question is not whether darkness exists, but whether anyone can read its pattern before another life becomes part of it.
